BIG BEND NATIONAL AND STATE PARKS

Big Bend National and State Parks

We started in Comanche, TX during December, and traveled all the way to Marfa, TX to stop and look at the Marfa Lights. It was a remarkable experience staying there for our first night. Unfortunately, because of the cloudy night we could not see the lights. Soon after we gathered our things and began to drive out to Big Bend National and State Parks to stop and take a few scenic hikes. We ended the next day in the Chihuahuan Desert and ended up in Laguna Meadows on our last day.

Accommodations

At Marfa, TX we stayed in a yurt which is another name for a Mongolian tent. The weather was relatively cold and the yurt kept us warm with the many wool blankets they offered as well as a small heater.

The second night was in the back country of the Chihuahuan Desert. The temperature there was perfect! Waking up to this view along with a herd of elk was a sight to behold. I would definitely recommend camping out here for any first time backpackers.

Our last camp site was up in the Chisos Mountains. Our site was called Laguna Meadows and was a 3.5 mile hike up a steep trail. There was plenty of wildlife around. From raccoons to mule deer.
