White Sands National Monument

The White Sands in late December has to be one of the best places to be! During the day it is 70 degrees and at night it goes down to 30 degrees. This desert experience is one to put into the bucket list. We started our journey from Comanche, TX and ended up staying the first night at Brantley State Park in Carlsbad, NM. We then made our way to the White Sands and backpacked there for two nights and three days. We ended our journey back in Carlsbad, NM by visiting Carlsbad Caverns and staying one night in the Trinity Hotel on New Year's Eve.

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL MONUMENT BACKPACKING TRIP

Accommodations

At the White Sands National Monument there are only 10 backcountry campsites available. Campsite #5 is the farthest campsite at a distance of 1 mile. It is the best campsite to get due to the amount of untouched sand. We ended up obtaining campsite #7 and it was still an incredible experience. There wasn't as much untouched sand and we had to walk around the dunes to find that picture perfect spot at sunset.

The Trinity Hotel is a historic landmark that is filled with historical events that happened during the 1800's. This time capsule hotel is well worth the price of the room. It's not everyday that you get to say you stayed inside a historical landmark where Pat Garret's Sheriff Office stood. If your interested in the story of Billy The Kid, then this is the place for you. The Trinity Hotel also offers free wine tasting and also has a restraint inside as well.

Our very first night in New Mexico was spent camping at Brantley Lake State Park in Carlsbad, NM. The campgrounds are up on a hill and the flat land around the campground allows the cool wind gusts to hit your tent during your stay. The state park itself has several hiking trails that lead to the lake.
