Camping in Caprock Canyon State Park
Caprock Canyon State Park is home to the official Texas bison herd. The park itself has several miles of different trails that take you to different parts of the canyon. We focused on the upper canyon trail to fern cave in mid-March.
Inside the park there are various rock formations that are very unique and aesthetically pleasing. The wildlife includes bison, mule deer, coyotes, and several different bird and lizard species. Juniper is a very common plant in this park and is present all year long.
We spent our first day hiking up to fern cave. The trail is very steep and rugged and considered a challenge for those who do not hike often. We started in the lower canyon and crossed several dry creeks.
We went to Caprock Canyon State Park in mid-March, so fern cave was still dried out. Later in the year fern cave is green and there is water constantly running through it.
Overall, Caprock Canyon State Park is a beautiful place to take a break from everyday society.
Tips:
1. Be sure to double check if there is a burn ban in effect or not.
2. Make sure to bring at least 3 liters of water with you on your hikes in the Canyon.
3. Always wear sunscreen during your hike.
